In the example shown on this slide, the designer was required to use three 330 µF, 10 V tantalum capacitors to meet the design goals. Although this design has a 5 volt rail, a 10 V tantalum was needed because tantalum capacitors must be voltage derated by as much as 50 percent. Utilizing a Panasonic polymer capacitor, this design was to be accomplished using one 100 µF 6.3 V capacitor. By using much less capacitance, this setup was able to offer improved ripple voltage with 1/3 of the number of capacitors in less than 1/3 of the space. Also note that it did not have the high voltage derating of the tantalum capacitor. SP-Caps can be used at their full rated working voltage and POSCAPs can be used at up to 90% of their rated working voltage.
