AN3018xA Series DC-DC Step-Down Regulators Slide 2

Recently, requests for power supply to microfabricated LSI (Large Scale Integration) are getting much more severe. Supply voltage has to be 1 V or lower and it’s accuracy has to be within plus/minus 10%, that is less than 100 mV. As its load current is getting higher, it becomes difficult to keep its voltage stable when the load current changes suddenly. This can be a critical issue. Character of load response, and transient variation is becoming more important in recent DC-DC converters. See the chart on center, in the case of conventional control mode DC-DC converters, output voltage can fall or exceed the limit of operating voltage of CPU when the load changed. That can cause some malfunction or break CPU. This kind of risk is becoming higher. Panasonic can solve the problem. They have developed DC-DC Converter ICs using Hysteretic Control Mode. A Hysteretic Control Mode DC-DC converter responds quick enough against sudden load change, and its transient variation is suppressed into required level for power supply for microfabricated CPU as shown on chart on right.
