The left side of the screen here illustrates BLE communication range between a transmitter and a receiver without coded PHY, while the right side of the screen captures BLE communication range between a transmitter and a receiver with coded PHY. Coded PHY adds more error correction to the BLE packet. This improves the bit error rate, or the number of bits that get dropped during a transmission, for a given distance between the transmitter and the receiver. In effect, users can transmit further using coded PHY. The trade-off is the data rate is reduced as the error correction is added. There are two levels of coded PHY: S = 2 and S = 8. With S=2, the relative range between the transmitter and receiver doubles, but the data rate is cut in half from 1 Mbps to 500 kbps. With S=8, the relative range between the transmitter and receiver quadruples, but the data rate is divided by eight from 1 Mbps to 125 kbps.
