Factory floors are noisy environments, which can cause bit errors when communicating across an Ethernet network. In fact, if the noise is bad enough, the network can shut down altogether. In order to add robustness in noisy environments like factory floors, the NCN26010 contains an internal feature called enhanced noise immunity (ENI). ENI can be enabled with an internal register. If enabled, the NCN26010 can tolerate an excessively noisy environment. In fact, when ENI is enabled, it has been demonstrated in the lab the ability to accommodate up to 40 nodes at 25 meters of single pair Ethernet cable, or up to 6 nodes across 60 meters of single pair Ethernet cable. This performance when ENI is enabled is well beyond the IEEE802.3cg requirements for 8 nodes across 25 meters of single pair Ethernet cable.
