One of the first questions an engineer will ask when initially investigating the possibility of moving to MOSFET technologies is in regards to the signal integrity. MOSFET’s inherently will display a clipping, or delay, in the rise time of the signal. Two of the key performance characteristics of a MOSFET relay are the off-state capacitance (Coff) and on-state resistance (Ron). Due to the reactive elements in a MOSFET capacitance, when combined with other elements prevent instantaneous changes in voltage from occurring. This rising edge of the wave form will appear more “rounded” when a MOSFET is used. To reduce the effects of a rounded leading edge, Omron has several families of MOSFET relays specifically designed for applications that require a low off-state capacitance and on-resistance combination or “CxR”.
