Although discrete logic systems were a great improvement, they still had many limitations. They could only perform very basic decision making and sequencing operations. These limitations were finally overcome with the use of embedded microcontrollers. It allowed designers to implement advanced functions like motor timing for preset dispensing levels, more efficient heating element control, and customized user settings. It also allowed much more accurate temperature and pressure control by using an integrated A/D converter to continuously monitor these parameters. Other benefits were an enhanced user interface with a keypad and an LCD display.
