An espresso machine provides a great example of how embedded controls have created more intelligent and useful small household appliance. Originally the mechanics were fairly crude with small, noisy motor controls and a pump based on inputs from the heating chamber. The traditional espresso machine is pretty simple, including a water reservoir, pump, filter, steam wand, control panel, and a pressurized heating chamber.
