NXP has recently released a new lineup of I/O Expanders with Agile I/O functionality. These devices include both 8-bit and 16-bit I/O ports – covering both existing pinouts and new configurations. These new generation devices extend the operating voltage range down to 1.65 V to cover the popular 1.8 V supply node, while still maintaining 5.5 V compatibility. They also allow for very flexible voltage level translation between typically lower voltage I2C buses and the outside world, rugged I/O pins. Also, these devices implement a reset input which reverts the logic to its power-on state and an interrupt-out to signal that an input has changed state. The Agile I/O features include programmable totem pole or open drain output versions, permitting a mix and match of connected peripherals. These outputs also have selectable output drive strength that allows one to optimally match the output to the needed load. Programmable input pull-up or pull-down resistors eliminate external components and reduces the system bill of materials. The interrupt source mask and interrupt status registers permit more software control over the system by masking off inputs that cause spurious interrupts and allowing the controller to directly inquire the source of pending interrupts. Finally, the input latches capture fast moving signals and reduce the real-time demands on the microprocessor, increasing system reliability.
