class
There are two classifications of Electronics protection. ESD, or Electrostatic Discharge, and TVS, Transient Voltage Suppression. ESD Protection Products are designed to protect electronic equipment from Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) pulses. ESD Pulses, like a static shock, contain very little energy but contain very High Voltage. Voltages that could exceed 30 Kilovolts. They also have an Ultra fast rise time of less than 1 nanosecond. TVS or Transient Voltage Suppression devices are designed to protect electronics equipment from damage caused by Surge pulses. Common examples of TVS events are lightning strikes and switching surges. Surge Pulses, unlike ESD pulses, contain High Energy but the voltage is much lower than ESD events. The voltages can exceed 4 kilovolts. It is important to note that the term TVS is commonly used as a generic term for both Surge protection and ESD protection diodes.
