ESD, or Electronic Static Discharge is one of the leading causes of damage to Electronic devices. A spark from your finger is one of the best-known examples of Electrostatic discharge. Many people have experienced this ESD “shock”. It is actually very easy to create. In the right climate, simply walking across a carpeted floor will generate enough of a static charge to create the visible discharge similar to the one seen here. In order for this discharge to be visible, the ESD charge would need to be very high voltage, around 30kilovolts. Most ESD events are not at the level where there is a visible “spark”. Therefore, most ESD events go unnoticed. Over 30% of damage in Electronics is caused by ESD events.
