IP stands for Ingress Protection, which describes the ability of a component or device to withstand penetration by solid objects or liquids. This rating system consists of the letters IP followed by two digits. The first digit indicates protection against the penetration of solid objects while the second digit describes protection against the penetration of liquids. This chart displays the relevant ratings used in the electronics industry. Protection against solid objects ranges from 1mm objects to complete protection from dust and from protection against strong water jets to long term immersion under high pressure. The most common ratings in the industry are IP66 (protection against dust and strong jets of water) and IP67 (protection against dust and temporary immersion up to 1 meter in depth).
