The abbreviation ESD stands for electrostatic discharge. Electrostatic discharge is something to avoid at all cost in any electronic application. It is a sudden discharge between persons, devices, and/or components. ESD can occur in many situations in everyday lives. The best example of electrostatic discharge is when one walks on a carpet, touches a doorknob and zap, gets shocked. In applications, it can cause malfunctions of an electronic device and in the worst case scenario even destroy electrical components irreversibly. The low detectability of such microlevel damage increases the importance of solid ESD protection.
