Molex modular jacks are capable of Ethernet speeds from Cat 3 @ 10 Mega-bits/second up to Cat 5e @ 1000 Mega-bits/second, or otherwise known as Giga-bit Ethernet. A common misconception is that Cat 6 is required for Giga-bit Ethernet speeds; however, the truth is that Cat 5e connectors were originally designed for Giga-bit Ethernet and will operate within specifications at that speed. For speeds beyond Giga-bit Ethernet, most customers will opt for a connector with integrated magnetics as opposed to a modular jack. Molex modular jacks also support PoE when combined with the necessary supporting hardware. Supported PoE standards include PoE 15 W, PoE+ 30 W, and 4PPoE (four pair PoE) 60 W. With these capabilities, a device with a Molex modular jack can connect at Giga-bit Ethernet speeds as well as provide up to 60 W of power for that device with the necessary PoE circuitry as supporting hardware.
