There are AC and DC types of electric vehicle charging stations, both with their own benefits and design challenges. The AC chargers use the vehicle’s onboard charger. The AC Level 1 charging, at 120 V, charges the battery in 8 to 12 hours. The AC Level 2 charging, up to 240 V, cuts charging time in half, and the fast DC charging bypasses the onboard charger; it converts high power AC into DC, charging in less than 30 minutes.
