Wireless protocol standards have an important place in industry, but they are not without their drawbacks. They are ideal for products that must interoperate with products from other manufacturers. Bluetooth headsets that work with any cell phone are an ideal example. However, the design burden may not be reduced, but shifted from the hardware design to software interface and design. Also, trying to do anything outside if the box is usually difficult or impossible. Another significant consideration is that when the product can work with any other product on the market, the value of the product is reduced to price. There is not fundamentally much that is different among cell phone headsets, so cost becomes a leading factor in a customer’s purchasing decision.
