Intermediate bus voltages of 12V, 24V, or 28V are common in industrial, aerospace, communications and defense electronics. Meanwhile the input operating voltages for logic devices has been decreasing with successive generations. Such high voltages compared to the constantly decreasing operating voltage of digital logic leaves a narrow margin between normal operation and irreparable damage. When mission critical electronics fail, business is disrupted or people’s lives are at risk so high-uptime is an important selling point. Compounding this reliability challenge is the fact these systems experience many harsh environments, enduring voltage surges, vibration, temperature extremes and operate in tight or remote locations where repairs would take a long time. Under such circumstances, a risk mitigation plan should be considered. The LTM4641, combining a 38V input, 10A step-down regulator with integrated protection for digital logic, is designed to form an important part of that plan.
