Electronics in handheld devices, portable instruments, and high-availability systems are often powered from multiple DC sources such as wall adapters, USB ports, main and backup batteries, as well as redundant or auxiliary supply rails. Selecting the appropriate input supply to power the system is not a trivial task. A bad implementation can oscillate between supplies, cause power brownouts, or damage the input supplies by allowing reverse current. This presentation will demonstrate how Linear Technology’s PowerPath controllers simplify the task of dynamic supply selection and review each product in the prioritizer family and provide details on how they uniquely address the challenges faced in multi-input power systems.
