The features and benefits of the LTC3225 and LTC3225-1 are outlined on this slide. These include automatic cell balancing which maintains equal voltages on both SuperCap cells, even when charging, protecting the SuperCaps from overvoltage damage. Also, the boost charging feature saves power, which is especially key in a backup application, because the cell balancing resistors are no longer needed. Additionally, the LTC3225 and LTC3225-1’s patented low-noise charge pump architecture maintains a series of input current pulses which can be easily filtered by a small ceramic capacitor resulting in the lowest possible input voltage and current ripple. Finally, the devices will not discharge the SuperCaps when the input supply is removed or is shorted to ground because there is no capacitor load or leakage current back through the IC’s charger.
