For high performance test and measurement equipment, noise may be the most critical parameter, for a number of reasons. High initial accuracy and low drift voltage references are becoming more available, which increases the relative importance of noise. In addition to that, system calibration can reduce some sources of instability such as initial accuracy, but cannot reduce noise. Finally, electronics are continuously moving to lower system voltages. With lower voltages, noise must also decrease by a commensurate amount to maintain the same level of performance. In summary, voltage noise often sets the measurement limit of electronic instrumentation.
