Traditional wired serial protocols have proven to be very effective for machine to machine communication, but they come with a number of limitations which make them prohibitive in many applications. Running cable, especially at longer lengths, is an expensive proposition. Not only must the installer pay for the cost of the cable, but there are additional costs which must be taken into account, such as labor costs, right-of-way issues and safety issues. In addition, some serial protocols, such as RS-232 are limited in the maximum distances the standards support. It may not even be feasible to run a cable with these restrictions in some environments.
