Introduction to Microphones Slide 8

Directional microphones respond to the difference in pressure from sounds entering two microphone ports. Unidirectional microphones include damping in the rear sound port path that delays the sound propagation relative to sound entering the front sound port. The two sound ports communicate with opposite sides of the diaphragm. When equal pressures appear at the diaphragm, it does not move and sound is canceled.
