Polymer Capacitors for Auto Applications Slide 4

Given the higher capacitance range of polymers, the aluminum electrolytic and polymer capacitors will also compete. When board space is limited or a low profile component is required, polymers will be selected. The instability of wet electrolytic capacitors across temperature and frequency will often result in the selection of a polymer solution. For applications needing more than a few years of reliability, the dry-out effects of the wet electrolytic capacitors also result in a preference for polymer technologies which have no notable wear-out mechanism and will last far beyond the maximum lifetime expectance of any hardware. The low ESR and low ESL properties of the polymer capacitance also result in greatly improved circuit performance and reduced piece counts. This low property also provides for the added advantage of higher ripple handling capabilities compared to the high ESR aluminum electrolytic capacitor.
