The first region covered in this product training module is where the current is limited to reduce heating due to I2R losses. This is the frequency range where AC current is restricted (or limited) to the maximum allowable temperature rise of 20°C above ambient. In this graph the red line is the AC current versus frequency. As frequency increases in the voltage limited region, the current increases due to the decreasing impedance of the MLCC. As the current increases, the self-temperature rise of the MLCC will also increase. Eventually, the MLCC will reach the maximum allowable temperature rise of 20°C above ambient. At this point, the current must be limited so that the MLCC’s temperature will not increase above the max allowable temperature rise.
