MLCCs, or multilayer ceramic capacitors are traditionally rated for DC voltages, although they are often used in AC applications. In some applications, MLCCs may be used to filter small AC voltages on a DC bus to produce a smooth DC voltage. However, MLCCs may also be used where higher AC voltages are present and additional factors need to be considered. Engineers cannot assume the AC voltage based on the DC voltage rating of the MLCC. For example, a 100 VDC rated MLCC does not equal a 100 VRMS rated MLCC.
