In order for it to be clear why Error Correcting Code, or ECC is important, some key application segments are shown. There are a diverse number of applications for electronics today, but the segments of Automotive, Industrial, Medical, and Communications are distinguished from the Consumer segment, in several ways. Perhaps most crucial, these applications are expected to continue to work without failing or being out of service for many years. In these segments, failures can be very costly and disruptive. System architecture, component selection, software, and testing all help to achieve dependable systems. This presentation will focus on errors that can occur in memory components, in particular DDR3 DRAMs.
