Shown here is a comparison between two simple installations without and with PoE. This is a setup where an Ethernet switch and an RFID reader are connected via one standard Ethernet cable. The non-PoE setup uses two 24 VDC power supplies and two power cables to power each device. With Power over Ethernet technology, one power supply and one power cable can be eliminated, however, there are two things that have to be considered. First, an introduction of a PoE capable Ethernet switch is necessary. Second, a larger power supply is needed to enable PoE feature inside the PoE capable Ethernet switch. Depending on the power level needed, 48 VDC or 54 VDC power supply is necessary for a switch to provide PoE or PoE+ power level to the RFID reader.
