So why be concerned about EMI? There are many different regional laws that limit the EMI emissions, also known as EMC or Electromagnetic Compliance. Typically these are approved and monitored by government agencies. Please note that Gap Pad™ EMI 1.0 was not designed or intended to resolve EMC standards; instead it should be used to assist in the resolution of EMI and/or enhance the signal to noise ratio (SNR). Product field failures do include EMI and usually are hard to duplicate consistently. Remember that the size of mobile phone in the 1990s was about the size of a brick. Compared to today’s mobile phone size, the size has been dramatically reduced. Imagine the components shrinkage, along with the boards. This shrinkage in size has a direct EMI impact. Other EMI issues can also occur with insufficient noise margin, last minute design changes, and replacement of obsolete components. Imagine having chronic issues with a cell phone (i.e., dropped calls) that could be attributed to EMI sensitivity – would that create a happy customer? Unlikely. That is the reason why controlling EMI and meeting emissions limits is key to success in the market.
