The MaxLinear USB UARTs are compatible with the USB CDC-ACM specifications. Therefore, these devices can work with the standard CDC-ACM driver in Windows and Linux if a simple driver for sending and receiving data is all that is required. However, if more enhanced features require support, a Windows WHQL certified driver can be downloaded from Windows Update or from MaxLinear's website. Whether it is the CDC-ACM driver or the WHQL certified drivers, they are virtual COM port drivers. The USB UART will appear to be a COM port even though it is a USB device. Users wanting to customize their own drivers can do so by requesting the source code files from MaxLinear. There are software driver source codes available for Windows desktop operating systems, Windows CE or Windows Mobile, Mac and Linux.
