Eaton offers high current protection in smaller packages. Both fast-acting (FA/FF) and time-delay (TD) types of fuses are available in many different sizes. A common size is the Surface Mount Technology (SMT) standard 1206 CHIP package. This is often referred to as 3216 in metric units and has a footprint of 3.2mm by 1.6mm. Solid Matrix construction creates a fast-acting fuse rated up to 30A and is suitable for high temperature applications. The Solid Matrix construction also provides excellent cycling characteristics, benefitting pulsed current applications and applications where bursts of current are expected in normal operation. Wire-in-air construction allows for very high inrush currents in time-delay type fuses. Time-delay fuses are available with ratings up to 12A. The 30A and 12A ratings are very high for such a small package and often allow these fuses to replace two larger Brick-style (6mm by 2.3mm footprint) fuses combined in parallel to handle these current requirements. Note that like the larger fuses, CHIP fuses can be combined to operate in parallel for applications that demand even higher current ratings.
