There are two types of overcurrent events: an overload condition, which is simply drawing excessive current beyond the designed capacity of the circuit; and a short circuit or fault current, which is a much higher current than the normal circuit current (IN). Fuses serve two main purposes: to protect components, equipment and people from risk of fire and electric shock caused by overcurrent conditions; and to isolate subsystems from the main system once a fault has occurred.
