Placing the ESD diode as close to the input source as possible ensures most of the surge is diverted through the protection devices. Having the shortest trace to the ESD diodes also helps lower the resistance, and channels the surge energy through the ESD diodes instead of the device being protected. Connecting the ESD diodes to the chassis ground or reference ground instead of signal ground is preferable and makes the layout more robust.
