Mini-breakers can be categorized into three major areas. The first is lithium-ion battery cell protection. This is the original application for the mini-breaker and they are used in a wide range of applications such as notebook PCs, tablet PCs, VR headsets, headphones, walkie talkies, and body cameras. The second major category is connection protection. Wherever there is an imperfect connection, Joule heating is the result of the increase in resistance. This increase in heat can impact long-term reliability and even pose a hazard. For that reason, low-resistance mini-breakers are being located close to connectors such as USB cables, EV charging plugs, wireless charging coils, and charging pins in docking stations to help protect against excessive Joule heating. The third application is for heater protection. Most heaters will use some form of temperature control to ensure the optimum temperature is achieved. However, mini-breakers are increasingly being used as independent backup protection for heater circuits to ensure long-term reliability and safety.
