It should always be the goal to achieve as much as possible inside the timeline and time budget that a designer has available. Microchip AVR 8-bit microcontrollers are all based on the same CPU with the same peripherals. This way it is possible to select one platform and use it for all projects - from the smallest projects replacing discrete logic up to complex single-chip applications with several communication interfaces, high-end analog and multiple other interfaces. Using one platform for many projects enables reuse of efforts made in previous projects. This way developers can concentrate on adding value to the new project instead of having to learn new tools or to rewrite and redevelop hardware that does not differentiate the product from the previous releases. For instance, if an application today needs USB next year, this can easily be achieved on a Microchip megaAVR. Just add the USB driver; there is no need to rewrite the application. Having an efficient microcontroller platform (with an easy-to-use development environment that allows development in C and tools that allow reuse of existing hardware and software knowledge) enables on-schedule product launch. With megaAVR devices there are migration paths for almost all challenges that might arise during a project, which significantly reduces the risk of having to perform a platform change halfway through the project.
