Changes to code size, SRAM requirements or general-purpose I/O pins are not the only specification changes one can encounter during the lifetime of a product, or between different projects. The Microchip megaAVR microcontroller family includes application-specific standard products (ASSPs) that address this need for flexibility. The main features and CPU are identical, but these ASSPs add specific peripheral feature modules. Additional features on megaAVR microcontrollers can include USB, CAN, LCD driver, high-performance PWM, DACs, capacitive touch sensing and more. There is also a version with an integrated radio transceiver—the ATmega128RFA1. Moving from a standard product to an ASSP is as simple as moving between two standard products. C-code and peripheral drivers can be reused, and Microchip offers stacks and other support for CAN, LIN and USB. These are all pre-verified, easy to use and optimized for the Microchip AVR CPU. The result is a more efficient application and reduced development time.
