One of the key requirements when choosing a temperature sensor is accuracy. Analog Devices has two high accuracy parts with an accuracy of 0.5ºC over a wide temperature range. This makes the parts suitable for a wide range of applications, including, but not limited to, those listed here. The first application listed, cold junction compensation, is required for thermocouples where the accuracy of the thermocouple is determined by the accuracy of the compensation. Other applications, such as dialysis machines and imaging in the medical space, require half degree Celsius accuracy. Also, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems require accuracy to become more efficient, or ‘greener’. High accuracy allows greater control over the heating or air conditioning system and helps reduce the power consumed by such devices. Additionally, cold storage applications require food and medicines to be stored and transported at specific temperatures. High accuracy temperature sensors allow accurate control and monitoring to help reduce spoilage. The circuit diagram shown here illustrates a typical temperature monitoring application where the ADT7310 is used for both cold junction compensation and ambient temperature monitoring.
