In summary, USB 3.0, also known as Super Speed USB, is the next evolutionary phase of the Universal Serial Bus. Super Speed USB shows a 10X increase in speed over USB 2.0 and is faster than both eSata and Firewire 800 technologies. USB 3.0 is backward and forward compatible with USB 2.0, but for it to perform as Super Speed USB it is necessary that the device, cables, port, and controller all be USB 3.0 components. Data packets are sent asynchronously point to point which eliminates the requirement to poll devices for data to be received; plus USB 3.0 data transfers are full duplex with data being transmitted and received simultaneously.
