IDC-Slide6

Before the introduction of IDC, the two ways to terminate cable were solder or crimp. Both techniques have established places in wire harness manufacture. Soldering requires special tooling and preparation and each conductor has to be individually soldered, making it expensive to produce cable assemblies where there are many wires. Crimping is less expensive from a labor and materials cost perspective, but conductors still have to be terminated individually.
