A couple of simple but effective accessories are available that enhance the usability of socket connectors. Pull Tabs can be used for preventing damage to components during use and maintenance. This is attached to the socket connector by looping it through the strain relief clip. The ends are attached with a strip of adhesive on the inside edge of the tab. Pulling on the tab reduces stress on the cable terminations when disconnecting a socket from a mated header. In a system where there are several socket assemblies having the same number of pins, ensuring the correct connectors and headers are mated is critical to avoid damage to the equipment. The Coding Key or Keying Plug is a means to ensure the right parts are connected. The coding key is used to plug a socket contact so that the male pin cannot enter it. The corresponding pin of the header must, of course, be pulled out prior to soldering to the board. The combination of plugged socket contact and pulled pin ‘codes’ that pair of connectors so that they, and only they, will be mating compatible.
