The material selection process can be separated into two steps. First, select the appropriate ISODAMP™ material series for the application. Second, select the optimal durometer within that material series. The first part, series selection, is pretty straightforward. Two questions will help to determine which series is most suitable for the application. First, does the application require halogen-free materials; and second, will the material be subject to high continuous operating temperatures. The design engineer should trace the lines of this graph in answering those questions to conclude which of the three sets of materials will be best suited for their application. Also note that TPEs may exhibit compression set while under load in very high temperatures. C-6000, a thermoplastic vulcanizate, or TPV, can be used to mitigate these effects. However, if normal operating conditions of the device involve extreme conditions, the engineer should step up to a premium thermoset elastomer, such as the ISOLOSS SL material series.
