DO NOT ATTEMPT to Re-Create

If you’re familiar with the Disney franchise or the Star Wars Universe, you’ve probably heard of The Mandalorian — arguably one of the most popular television shows right now. As a 2020 Emmy® Award Winner, The Mandalorian is a show that follows a lone bounty hunter that travels the galaxy engaging in various adventures with his friend “Baby Yoda.”

While waiting for season 3 to finish filming and release, Hacksmith Industries will create an entire working set of Mandalorian armor. This set will eventually have a grappling hook, a blaster, a jetpack, and more. For their first project, the Hacksmith team is building a flame-thrower gauntlet. Check out how it was made in the video below!

How Does it Work?

The bracer that holds the flamethrower mechanism was laser cut from a sheet of stainless steel. A vice-break attachment was used with a standard vice to obtain the angles for pieces that mount components onto the bracer. The round bracer was also finished in a vice. These pieces were all welded together for the finished product.

The flames themselves are fueled by corn starch since propane didn’t fit the project’s overall aesthetic, and gasoline was too dangerous. Corn starch doesn’t burn easily, but it will burn if it is well-dispersed. Fortunately, fire extinguishers are a great device for dispersing and shooting out powdered fuel. A second propane tank was later added to provide pressure for the tank and help ignite the corn starch. A long hose is connected to the fuel tank that ends up at the ignitor mounted to the gauntlet, which keeps the fuel away from the part that shoots flames.

A custom-made PCB controls the flame thrower mounted on the gauntlet. The PCB also has extra buttons that can be programmed in the future to control more gadgets like a grappling hook and jetpack.
