DO NOT ATTEMPT to Re-Create
Building a lightsaber—arguably the most well-known weapon in Star Wars history—is nothing new to Hacksmith Industries. The team has had a working lightsaber for quite some time and has been experimented with different versions of it for years, which eventually led them to build one capable of causing real damage: the protosaber, also known as the world’s first real burning lightsaber.
Since building the protosaber last December, the Hacksmith team had the idea to create another altered version of it to be used in a duel. Check out how the Hacksmith’s latest lightsaber was made, how it differs from the previous lightsaber versions, and watch the team duel it out in the video below!
How Does it Work?
For the past three years, Hacksmith Industries has been making improvements to their lightsaber design. Like the previous model, Ian’s lightsaber uses a Titanium blade with a ceramic insulated tungsten core. Electricity flows through the Titanium and back down the tungsten rod turning the blade red hot through resistive heating. Although the lightsabers (or protosabers, more accurately) can reach temperatures over 2500 degrees Fahrenheit, the battery packs needed to power them are quite bulky. The Hacksmith’s new lightsaber still uses a large bulky battery pack, but it managed to save some production time by simplifying the circuitry.
In this version of the protosaber, the Hacksmith found batteries from Tattu that came with a battery management system, which greatly simplified the circuit design. You can see how much the battery management system simplifies the circuit in the schematics below.
