If it seems to good to be true, this time it isn't!

Today I had the chance to go into a deeper dive with the "Swiss-Army Knife for Engineers", Red Pitaya STEMlab 125-10. This is a truly incredible product that I haven't heard many people talking about yet, so let me break down for you the open-source solution to all of your home-lab struggles!

What comes in the box?

The STEMlab comes with everything you could ever need to get started, mine is an older generation 125-10, but the newer version 125-14 comes with all the same parts in the box with the starter kit!

In the box you will receive:

  • The Red Pitaya STEMlab
  • Red Ethernet Cable
  • Micro SD card with SD Card adapter
  • A power adapter with plugs for wherever you are in the world!

Getting Started:

The best part of the Red Pitaya is the Documentation. Whether you're trying to set up your board for the first time, loading new firmware, or want to learn about a new tool or add one of your own. The documentation can help you find the solution you are looking for.

The first step is just like setting up a Raspberry Pi, adding the operating system image to the SD card using your favorite imaging tool.

From there, you can follow the quick-start documentation to have your board connected to the internet using the provided ethernet cable and your router!

But what if you don't have access to your router? What if you can't connect your red pitaya since you are using the device somewhere where accessing the router isn't allowed??

Good news! You can use the Red Pitaya with a USB Wi-Fi adapter to broadcast a Wi-Fi SSID that your computer can connect to, avoiding the ethernet connection altogether! All you need to do is use the network manager application to set up Wi-Fi connections.

Using the Red Pitaya:

There are so many tools available for the Red Pitaya, coming standard with the basic OS are the:

  • Oscilloscope
  • Signal Generator
  • Spectrum Analyzer
  • Logic Analyzer
  • Bode Analyzer
  • LCR Meter
  • SDR
  • Vector Network Analyzer

And even more tools are available from the marketplace including:

  • PID Controller
  • Tesla Meter
  • DSP Sandbox
  • Open-Source Radar

I demoed some of these tools in my video, so make sure to check that out for a more in-depth guide on how they work.

If that doesn't make you want one for yourself, let me tell you my absolute favorite part about this device. Since everything is well documented, and the board is open source, you can re-flash the OS anytime you want and create your own tools and applications to fit your needs. And one of my absolute favorite features is that since it connects to Wi-Fi you can use literally any Wi-Fi connected screen to display the measurements from the board. With that feature, you can have your oscilloscope in your car or bring it with you to work! Here's an example showing how my computer isn't connected to the board, but it can still see the measurement of the audio signal!

There are far too many features to cover with the STEMlab in just this short blog post, but I hope these highlighted why the STEMlab might just be the solution to all of your home-lab measurement problems. I've already started using mine with my school projects since I can keep it in my backpack and measure anything I want, anywhere I want!

Until next time, I hope you learned something today. My name is Will Siffer, and I am the Digi-Key ambassador for Purdue University. As always, I hope you find something to be curious about today.
