DEMO_XDPS2201_65W1 | First Look

Welcome to First Look, brought to you by DigiKey and Infineon. Infineon’s DEMO_XDPS2201_65W1 is a 65 watt USB power delivery type C programmable power supply charger demo board. This board leverages the Infineon XDPS2201 multi-mode, digitally configurable hybrid flyback controller with two CoolMOS™ superjunction MOSFETs in a half-bridge configuration. The XDPS2201 is able to drive both high- and low-side MOSFETs in an asymmetric half-bridge flyback topology. The XDPS2201 combines the simplicity of a traditional flyback topology with the performance of a resonant converter. The main advantage of this hybrid-flyback topology is the extended energy storage approach, which enables the usage of a smaller transformer at the same switching frequency compared to the standard and active clamp flyback topologies. Zero voltage switching on the primary side and zero current switching on the secondary side are achieved through the means of regulating both positive and negative magnetizing current to increase efficiency. In addition, transformer leakage energy is recycled avoiding the switching losses of traditional single switch flyback converter. The circuit consists of three main portions: the input stage, main stage, and PD control circuit stage. The input stage contains an EMI filter, bridge rectifier, a differential mode filter, and a main energy storage capacitor. The main stage contains the two power switches, transformer, and resonant capacitor with three sources to supply the controller IC. The PD control circuit stage uses the CYPD3174 PD controller to sense the output voltage and generate a control signal that is transferred via an opto-coupler to the primary side control for the output voltage regulation. The DEMO_XDPS2201_65W1 board is designed for a wide input application and provides PD output voltage profiles of 5 V, 9 V, 12 V, 15 V and 20 V and a nominal continuous output current of 3.25 A. In addition, the demo board supports PPS output from 5 V to 20 V with the voltage step defined by the PD device. This design leads to a minimum efficiency of 93.5% at nominal power.
