Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) Isolation

Shown here is the basic structure of using a digital isolator for the isolation of a serial peripheral interface (SPI) bus. The SPI bus is a standardized bus for synchronous serial communication designed to provide a simple-to-implement, low-cost, and high-speed interface for microcontrollers and peripherals. SPI buses are commonly used for communication between an analog-to-digital converter and an MCU. A digital isolator with a configuration of three forward channels and one reverse channel is ideal for SPI implementation. The best solution for this type of task is to use the 4-channel digital isolator from Würth Elektronik with an integrated DC/DC converter, as shown on this slide. The digital isolator has a 3-/1-channel configuration and provides an isolation voltage of 5,000 VRMS and a data rate of up to 100 Mbps. The integrated DC/DC converter significantly reduces the number of components in the design and saves space on the PCB. In this way, it helps to ensure the required level of isolation and reliable transmission of high-speed signals required when designing an SPI bus.
