The VCNL4040 like the VCNL4020 and VCNL4010 includes an infrared emitter, photodiode for proximity, an ambient light photodiode and signal processing IC. Many competitor’s devices require a discrete emitter which is just one more component to worry about. What is really new about the VCNL4040 is that the customer can select one of four ambient light ranges. If the customer take all 65,000 counts that make up the 16-bit resolution and puts them in the lux range from 0 to 819, there is 0.0125 lux per count which is very fine resolution.
