The best way to choose an ICM product is by looking at the PHY reference design. Choose an ICM that is as close as possible to the electrical configuration of the magnetics on the reference design (whether it is four core, six core, eight core, or twelve core) using the IC cross reference. If a similar ICM is not available, consult the PHY manufacturer’s application notes or magnetics guide for acceptable guidelines. Usually both four core and six core circuits are acceptable for 10/100BT, and eight core and twelve core circuits are acceptable for 10/100/1000BT PHYs. Also, there may be only one connector supplier listed on the reference design, but other manufacturers’ products may work. Consult the application notes or magnetics guide from the PHY manufacturer for guidance. After the type of circuit is selected, choose a mechanical configuration that best meets the needs of the design. The TRP connector reference link provided on this slide will lead users to the TRP Connector supplier page at DigiKey, from there they can access the link to the PHY to ICM cross reference document via the link located under the Tools and Support tab.
