Amperage, or current, runs internally through the meter when conducting Amp testing. The fuses are the first line of defense to human or meter damage. Exceeding the Amp notation on the terminal will blow fuses or damage the meter. Also, trying to conduct a voltage test with the test leads in the Amp terminal will cause damage. For safety, it is always advisable to remove the terminal leads from the Amp settings after conducting an Amperage test. This lowers the chance of accidentally checking voltage (making a parallel connection) when the meter is connected in series for amperage. Blown fuses are most commonly caused by having the test leads in the wrong meter terminals; not by the wrong dial setting.
