With a built-in 4A power switch, the buck boost converter is able to deliver more than 2A output current at 3.3V in boost mode. The TPS63020 has a wide input voltage range supporting 2-Cell and 3-Cell Alkaline, NiCd or NiMH or Single-Cell Li batteries. The buck-boost converter is based on a fixed frequency, pulse-width-modulation (PWM) controller using synchronous rectification to obtain maximum efficiency, up to 96%. At low load currents, the converter enters Power Save mode to maintain high efficiency at low loads, maximizing the efficiency curve over a wide load current range. The Power Save mode can be disabled, forcing the converter to operate at a fixed switching frequency. High efficiency and low quiescent current, 30μA, helps designers to increase battery runtime of applications. A relatively high switching frequency of 2.4MHz allows designers to use small inductors and capacitors. The total solution needs about 100mm2 on the PCB and designs can be built with a height of less than. The TPS63020 features two very unique features: Dynamic input current limit and Smart Power Good. These features help to optimize system stability as peak to average power demand of the new features keeps increasing.
