There are more than two types of chip resistors, but this training module will only cover the differences between thin film and thick film. While thick film resistors are formed by screen printing metal particle resin composite, thin film resistors are formed by a deposited vacuum process such as Sputtering and Chemical Vapor Deposition. Due to this difference, thin film is generally far superior in performance when compared to thick film. Thick film used to be considered more reliable than thin film. However, the latest thin film resistors such as Susumu’s RG series exceed the reliability of thick film resistors.
