There are several advantages of using surface mount technology over through-hole technology. One major benefit is the overall size of the package. Through-hole LED Displays typically have a total height of about 12mm. When compared to a surface mount LED display, users will see a decrease of about 70% in height, bringing it down to about 3.75mm. It’s important to note that this decrease in height does not sacrifice any performance aspect of the component. The colors are just as crisp and bright. Having a 7-segment LED display package that’s just 3.75mm thin provides a much more flexible design ensuring that all limitations that would come with a bulky through-hole LED display are eliminated when using an SMD LED Display. In certain designs, the mechanical height restrictions may turn engineers towards using other display types. With the thinner height there’s no need for compromise on visibility, contrast, and brightness.
